ABOUT KIAN
After being exposed to various genres of music by my parents, I chose the cello when I was four years old after I saw Yo Yo Ma and Itzakh Perlman playing at the Academy Awards. I shouted ecstatically at Yo Yo Ma’s cello, saying “I want to play that!” Since then, I have been a part of Rice University’s Michael P. Hammond Preparatory Program at the Shepherd School of Music. In 2014, I was privileged to be chosen as a Texas Young Master, an honor granted to 20 young artists in Texas by the Texas Commission on the Arts and the Texas Cultural Trust. The award came with a $5000 grant spread over the course of two years to help pursue my artistic endeavors such as attending Madeline Island Music Camp in the summer of 2014 and also to continue to be part of the Preparatory Program at the Shepherd School of Music during the 2014-2015 school year. I was featured in an article in the Houston Chronicle about the award and my passion to collaborate with other musicians. I also was a guest speaker at the Texas Medal of the Arts 2015 and a guest performer at Ballet Austin’s Butler Fellowship Program Spring Performance. I was also a finalist in the Houston Symphony League Concerto Competition, and a winner of the 2015 Houston Young Artists Competition.

Dolce Strings Touring Ensemble is made up of advanced Suzuki violin, viola and cello students ages 9 to 18, led by our esteemed faculty, Meredith Harris, Elisabeth Hope and Danette Schuh. These extremely talented, motivated students participate in numerous full-day intensive workshops during the year to prepare for their exciting concert season. Repertoire includes selections from the great composers of the Classical and Baroque eras as well as Texas-style fiddling and popular toe-tapping tunes. These busy students all live in the greater Houston area and many of them perform with their school orchestras, youth symphonies and other groups. They come together here to share their love of learning and making music both at home and on the road. Our 2015-16 season, “Deep in the Heart of Texas”, includes local Houston area concerts, a benefit concert to raise funds for the FCC Arts with a Mission program, a featured performance at the Bob Wills Fiddle Festival in Greenville, TX and a Texas tour through Austin, College Station and San Antonio. Next year, the season begins with Destination Disney World Tour in November of 2016.
